GREAT WHITE AUDITION NOTICE
We are very excited to announce auditions for Great White, Bricolage's 2007 series winner. We are looking to mount another workshop of the piece, possibly two more, before our Mainstage World Premiere in May 2009. Please consider the information and character breakdown below before making the decision to audition. GREAT WHITE is a new musical theatre piece that is very singular in nature. It is hard to compare this piece stylistically to another musical because there is really nothing out there quite like it. But here are few things to think about before coming into meet the creative team. Auditions will be held Saturday June 21st, with callbacks on the 22nd. Time: 2-8 at City Theatre in their rehearsal room.
- The musical style is a combination of 70's rock, horror scores and contemporary music theatre.
- The piece is completely sung through with very little spoken dialogue. The songs flow in and out of standard structures with much that is sung outside of a normal/typical song structure. One must feel comfortable singing as if you were merely talking.
- As it is sung through, there is a LOT of music to be learned in a short amount of time. If you are a good sight-reader that is a major plus.
- There are many interior moments with the characters as the narrative moves back and forth between the character's interactions with each other and their own psyche fluidly.
- The tone of the piece is subtle, dark and brooding. This is not camp and is not heightened in any way, even though there are moments that are highly theatricalized. It has its feet firmly rooted into the ground.
- Because the piece is so new, we are looking for actors who are excited and energized by new work, and particularly who are adventurous and like to take creative risks in an effort to expand the form.
TO AUDITION
- For the audition, we would like to hear two songs, one that is contemporary musical theatre/rock, and one song that you just love.
- For musical theatre/rock, anything from Sondheim's darker catalogue would work: Sweeney, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, etc, or Hair, Tommy, etc.
- Be prepared to stay longer than your audition time to work. We might ask you to learn a piece of music on the fly. And please be prepared to return the very next day for call backs if requested.
- Please feel free to contact Matt the director at mattmmorrow@aol.com or Tami at Bricolage at tami@webbricolage.org if you have any questions.
- Auditions will be held Saturday June 21st, with callbacks on the 22nd. Time: 2-8 at City Theatre in their rehearsal room.
Great White Character Breakdown
Helen (F)- Early 30's. Pretty but a little tired. Once upper class and idealistic, now older and a bit jaded. She loves her husband but also resents him for the emptiness she has found in her life and yearns deeply for renewal. Mezzo.
Grady (M)- Mid 30's. Working class man with a big heart and a bigger conscience. Smart and street wise but also stubborn. Stymied by his wife's unrest in their relationship and his ineffectual position in his community; Grady's greatest struggle is that of emotional paralysis. Baritone.
Cooper (M)- 20's. Good looking, rich and knows it. Carries himself as one without much worry about the world or how he has to make his way in it, but is deeply passionate and scientific about his work. This is where he finds meaning in his otherwise passionless life. Tenor.
Colt (M)- 50's. A hard man and the quintessential New England fisherman. Proud of the life he has led and has no regrets. A rough and colorful character with a twinkle of danger in his eye. Baritone.
Rhodes (M)- Early 40's. Idealistic, self-made mayor of the town. Genuinely charming with and genuinely wants what is best for his community, but misguided by his classist's views. In control and everybody's best friend. Baritone.
