Speech and Debate Fundraiser

Bricolage board member Frank Vitale invites you to a special fundraiser for the upcoming Bricolage production of Speech and Debate.

Bricolage is preparing to stage the Pittsburgh premiere of Stephen Karam’s controversial and darkly funny play, Speech & Debate. In order to raise the funds needed to make this important play a real success, we are hosting an afternoon of great drinks, delicious food, and even a special performance of excerpts from the play. This event is a wonderful opportunity to support this fabulous production.

Speech & Debate brings to light issues of youth and sexuality – what it means to be a gay adolescent in today’s world, what it means to come out, and the fragile age at which sexuality, personal expression, and the freedom (or lack thereof) to discuss these topics openly all suddenly converge. This intensely honest and witty play highlights the stories of three high-school students who come upon a sex scandal in their hometown. As they set out to expose the guilty parties, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher, and the trio discovers the reality of limits set on the free speech of youth.

When this play premiered at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Underground in New York, the New York Times praised the production, saying, “The play's real accomplishment is its picture of the borderland between late adolescence and adulthood, where grown-up ideas and ambition coexist with childish will and bravado.”
